Wincanton Primary School LEARNING TOGETHER, LEARNING FOR LIFE

18th January 2008

Oops!
In last week’s newsletter the dates were incorrect for parent’s evenings.  The correct dates are 12th and 13th February.

Also the maths evening on 22nd January
is open to year 6 as well as year 5.  Sorry for any confusion caused.

Attendance

We are experiencing a few problems where children arrive late to school and are not registering at the office when they arrive.  Our policy is to follow up when we have not had contact from parents regarding absence by telephoning to check on the reasons for the absence.  This has resulted in some of you receiving a call from the office unnecessarily and we apologise for that.  Where children come in late to school without parents, they need to report straight to the office.  Where parents accompany the children, please would you report to the office.  We will remind children of their responsibilities and staff will ensure they send children to the office should they arrive late.  I hope this will prevent any further unnecessary calls home.
Miss Glen meets fortnightly with the Education Attendance Officer to review absence.  Where children’s attendance is below 90% careful checks are undertaken to establish reasons for absence and any follow up action needed.  Obviously where there is genuine illness and we have been informed, we do not follow this up with you unless we are concerned about your child’s progress.  Miss Glen will be contacting some parents shortly to update them on attendance/absence.  This is meant to be a supportive process for your child and their learning
Pre-School Children
Please could we ask that if you take and collect pre-school children, you do not call into the classrooms or the hall; please contact the school office if you need to get a message to your child.  It can be unsettling for the younger children if parents appear during a school session.

Lunchtime
I was contacted this week regarding the children eating lunch on the hall floor sitting around PE mats.  This is not a normal lunchtime arrangement and it will not happen again.

Gifted and Talented Afternoon
Pupils from years 5 and 6 attended a Gifted and Talented afternoon last Friday, held at Moor Lane Sports Ground.  The children were displaying PE skills and talents, along with children from other local primary schools.  A good time was had by all, despite the floods!!  Well done to everyone who took part: Jenny Naylor, Lucy Clements, Jordan Torode, Charlotte Fudge, Dylan Hatton, Matthew Howell, Ashley Spencer and Robby Thurgood.
